Detroit packer asks for tax break

Wolverine Packing Co. is asking for a 12-year property tax break for a plant it would build in the depressed eastern section of the city.

It has donated $300,000 to the city to clean up part of the site it wants to be designated by the city and the state as an area that qualifies for tax breaks.

The company has four plants operating at capacity in the area. It specializes in ground beef, steaks, pork, poultry and seafood.

It says the $30 million it would invest in a new plant would open up 100 jobs.
