The Schlegel family that owns Belwood Poultry is planning to
build an $8.1-million turkey processing plant where there now is a cold storage
facility in Windsor.
The city has given the company a 10-year break on property
taxes worth more than $821,000.
There are two Schlegel families, both with substantial
turkey quota and nursing homes. The ones that own Belwood Poultry are based in
the London area.
The other Schlegel family, which is Canada’s largest
turkey-producing business, is based in Kitchener and also owns nursing homes.
It recently bought the St. Jacobs Market property, the
next-door stockyards property and some nearby properties, including the site of
the TSC store, an antiques mall and a bulk foods store.
Windsor’s tax break convinced Belwood to make its investment
inside city limits.
The further-processing business will sell to markets on both
sides of the Canada-U.S. border and will generate about 50 jobs.
