Ben Stein pleads guilty

Ben Stein of Tavistock has pleaded guilty to neglecting a barn full of about 1,500 pigs.

A year ago inspectors from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found 1,265 pigs dead and euthanized another 250 at a barn at Langton, west of Simcoe.

The SPCA said Stein should have sought help that is available to farmers who are unable to care for their livestock.

He is to appear for sentencing April 26 at provincial court in Simcoe.

Stein is a son of Richard Stein of Thames Bend Farms.

Thames Bend was one of North America’s top breeding farms when it was run by the late Warren Stein and Richard.

Thames Bend is no longer in business.
