Maple Leaf fined for rental company error

Maple Leaf Foods Inc. has been fined $110,000 because a worker for a company hired to service a forklift failed to put blocks in front of truck wheels so it could not roll away.

The truck did roll away and the Genie GR12 forklift crashed off the loading dock and the driver was injured.

The accident happened in September, 2015, at 149 Brock Street in Thamesford: Maple Leaf is closing that turkey-processing plant and moving production to the Sofina plant in Mitchell, a transition that is due to be done by early next year.

Although neither the truck nor the driver were Maple Leaf's, the court ruled the company has responsibility to ensure that safety standards are observed by anyone on its property.
