Dairy farmers fined for employing illegals

A farm wife in upper Michigan has been fined $187,500 after she pleaded guilty to hiring 124 workers without checking their legal status.

Madeline Burke and her husband immigrated from Ireland and are farming in the Thumb area of Northern Michigan.

Her husband has decided to challenge the authorities on the basis that they pick on immigrants.

Denis Burke says they selectively target immigrant farmers and points to Dutch immigrants John and Anja Verhaar wgio were prosecuted in 2010.


The government denies any discrimination.
