PED outbreak in Chatham-Kent

Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus has hit a nursery-finisher operation in Chatham-Kent.

It’s the first outbreak since March 7, is the third this year and those three are the first since June of last year.

The virus is devastating to piglets with death rates sometimes running to 100 per cent. It is less fatal to older pigs.

The Ontario industry has learned a great deal about containing outbreaks and cleaning up infected herds since the disease first came here from the United States in January, 2014.
