Swap quotas for a lumber deal

The Montreal Economic Institute says trade negotiators ought to swap a softwood lumber deal for supply management for dairy and poultry farmers.

It says both producers and consumers would benefit from that type of deal for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

United States President Donald Trump insists that NAFTA needs to be renegotiated to make it a better deal for the U.S.

Canada and the U.S. have a history of clashing over U.S. moves that have hurt the Canadian softwood lumber industry and Canadian supply management for the dairy and poultry sectors that denies U.S. interests an opportunity to compete in the Canadian market.

The Montreal Economic Institute has a history of criticizing supply management, particularly for the dairy sector.
