An American researcher has found that
heat kills avian influenza, confirming what Canadians have been doing by
composting euthanized flocks to stop outbreaks from spreading.
Erica Spackman, of the United States
Department of Agriculture’s research service division, recently completed research that
showed that the virus is dead after as little as one day exposure to 32 degrees
(90 Fahrenheit).
Based on her findings, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture is recommending two days at 32 or higher heat to ensure
inactivation.
