Two new PED cases in Ontario

Two outbreaks of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus surfaced this week, both in finishing barns.

One is in Middlesex County, the other in Perth County.

That brings the total number of outbreaks to 90 since the virus first showed up in Ontario a little more than a year ago.

These are the first cases since Jan. 28.

There have been far fewer cases this year than last. Farmers are better prepared now and have been exercising stricter biosecurity measures.

Most of the herds that were infected last year have since been cleared through protocols prescribed by veterinarians.

The Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board and the Ontario Pork Council have been leaders in helping the industry to get rid of the virus that is deadly to newborn pigs.
