CFIA warns importers about sulphites

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning importers of fresh fruits and vegetables that it doesn't allow them to be treated with sulphites.

It's not clear whether the CFIA has been finding sulphites in imported fresh fruits and vegetables, but the warning is posted today on its website.

The CFIA and the Public Health Agency of Canada are warning consumers about Listeria monocytogenes in packed fresh salads from a processing plant in Springfield, Ohio, that also supplied President's Choice bagged salads to Loblaws many stores, including Zehr's markets and SuperCentres.

Sulphites are often used by processors of bagged salads and processed fresh fruits to preserve a fresh appearance and to deter bacteria.
