Wellington hog nursery hit by PED

A nursery in Wellington County has had an outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.

The virus is devastating for nursery-age piglets. There is no indication from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs how many pigs have died.

It is the 81st herd to be hit by the virus since the first outbreak in Ontario about 18 months ago.

It is also the first since May 13 and the 12th this year.

Ontario’s swine veterinarians remain optimistic that the virus can be eradicated from Ontario.
