Burnbrae found wanting

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency detained a number of shell eggs from Burnbrae-owned facilities over the first three months of this year and some were so bad they were dumped.

The Maple Lynn Foods division at Strathroy had shell eggs detained on Feb. 19 and March 31 and some were dumped on Feb. 22.

Burnbrae Farms at Mississauga had eggs detained and dumped on March 27.

Other companies who had products detained were Burton Meats Inc. of Ottawa (beef trim and raw beef burgers), Esslinger Foods Ltd. of Burlington (soups and gravy mixes), Apetito Canada Ltd. of Brampton (minced chicken), Marini Foods Ltd. of Toronto (ready-to-eat cured sausage) and Olymel had both chicken and pork products detained in separate incidents.

The CFIA ordered disposal of raw beef products contaminated with E. coli three times at Brookfield Cold Storage in Brampton – March 12, 19 and 26 – and ready-to-eat pork at Zadi Foods Ltd. of Brampton because of biological hazards on Jan. 21 and 22.

The agency fined Nadeau Poultry  Ltd., a subsidiary of Maple Lodge Farms, $7,800 for a transportation violation, bringing its total CFIA fines to $227,800. A number of other transporters were also fined.

The CFIA assessed 91 fines totalling $307,400 during the quarter.
