The annual London Poultry
Show has been cancelled because the industry is on high biosecurity to prevent
the spread of avian influenza.
“While the London Poultry Show offers an important
educational opportunity, we have determined that the risk to the industry
outweighs any potential benefits of the Show, as well as potential consequences
resulting from its cancellation,” said Keith Robbins, executive director of the
Poultry Industry Council.
A flock of 30,000 turkeys near Woodstock has been
infected with the H5N2 strain of avian influenza, prompting officials to
euthanize the 20,000 birds that have survived and to impose a five-kilometre
quarantine zone that incorporates eight poultry farms.
The quarantine zone prevents traffic in and out.
