Japanese hog farmers willing to reduce tariff

Bloomberg news agency says the national organization representing Japanese hog producers is willing to take a cut of 50 per cent on pork tariffs.

That would reduce tariffs to as low as $2 per kilogram.

Bloomberg identified the group’s managing director, Hisao Kuramoto, as the source of its information about Japan’s offer during the negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Improved access for Canadian pork and beef is one of the chief aims of Canadian negotiators in talks both directly with Japan at the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
