Ontario will introduce legislation to enable it to extend
crop insurance to additional crops.
It’s the only province without the ability to extend the
federal-provincial program beyond the basic 90 commercial crops.
Grains are by far the most important crops covered by the
insurance program; in Ontario, that’s corn, soybeans and wheat.
“Expanding the
number of products eligible for production insurance and strengthening the
agri-food industry is part of the government's economic plan for Ontario,” says
a news release from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs.
The news release
makes no mention of Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal or Premier Kathleen Wynne.
Maybe they're hiding because they don't want to field questions about lack of progress on federal-provincial promises to offer livestock and poultry insurance.
