India loses trade case

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled that India is violating its trade regulations by maintaining a ban on poultry from the United States, claiming it’s concerned about low-pathogenic strains of avian influenza.

The WTO ruled the ban that has been in place since 2007 is “inconsistent with international fair trade practices.”

It ruled that the ban is not supported by scientific evidence.

What's disturbing about this case is that India got away with protectionism for seven years.

The WTO needs a better and faster way to deal with trade barriers masquerading as concerns about food safety and disease.
