U.S. spots listeria in Ontario-made ham

Listeria has been identified in ham shipped from Santa Maria Foods of Brampton, Ontario.

It was the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service that spotted the contamination triggering a recall of about 2,600 pounds of boneless ham prosciutto.

It’s reminiscent of the XL Foods Inc. recall of beef contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7, also first identified by the Americans.

So far the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has not said anything about the recall, but I expect it will say something soon.

The ham product was shipped to California and Michigan for further distribution.

The U.S. recall applies to 50-pound boxes produced Nov. 14 and 15.

The FSIS identified Listeria monocytogenes during routine sampling for re-inspection of products that were supposed to have been thoroughly inspected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The Americans say neither they nor the company have received any complaints about consumer illnesses arising from the prosciutto ham.
