Chicken board won't budge

Jimmy Lee, owner of CAMI International Poultry Inc, says the Chicken Farmers of Ontario marketing board is refusing to budge to grant him supplies to keep his plant running this fall.

The chicken board cut him off as part of a no-trade deal it made with Quebec, a deal that will stop farmers in either province from selling their birds to processors in the other province beginning this fall.

All other chicken processors in Ontario have been granted enough birds to make up for supplies there were getting from Quebec, but not CAMI International.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do," Lee said today.

The chicken board seems intent on giving the Harper government good reason to make concessions that will undermine supply management when it finally sits at the negotiating table for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations.
